Woolloomooloo

Sydney, NSW

Woolloomooloo is a suburb in Sydney, New South Wales known for its historic wharf buildings, which have been transformed into luxury apartments and hotels. The area features a mix of architectural styles, ranging from Victorian and Art Deco to modern and contemporary designs. It offers a unique blend of heritage and modern architecture that reflects its rich history and urban character.

This historical terrace house located in Woolloomooloo dates back to the 1850s. Its facade embodies the Victorian Georgian style and the dwelling is semi-detached. It's conveniently situated just a few steps away from the Botanical Gardens and some of Sydney's most popular attractions.

The size of this property is 96 square metres and it is located in Sydney's CBD. As the property is located within a heritage conservation area, it is critical that existing structures of historical significance are preserved. Our design approach is to prioritise preservation of the heritage facade and structures. We aim to design a contemporary interior that optimises space usage, while also meeting the practical requirements and desires of our clients within the constraints of the limited available space.

As you enter through the main door, there is an open kitchen dining and living space with easy access to the garden at the rear. We have added skylights and a glass floor to the design to maximise natural light and ventilation in the building. The ground floor is more communal and will be used for entertainment whereas the first floor is designed to be more private. There are two bedrooms upstairs, separated by an indoor garden in the centre.

For the interiors, the joinery on the ground floor in the kitchen, laundry, and bar is made of the same material to provide a consistent look. Key internal finishes include timber, brass, and stone. The first floor bedrooms feature custom-designed floor-to-ceiling joinery. The majority of the joinery serves as wardrobe space while a section of it is specifically designed to function as a study table. To make the most of the available space, we have created a cabinet under the existing stairs to provide additional storage.

These proposed works will enhance the functionality of the space and improve the lifestyle of our clients.
